Cinemagraphs: the next big trend?

The web is constantly evolving, and with new technologies being developed every day it can be hard to stay on top of emerging trends. But a new year brings the opportunity to reflect on some of the trends we expect to see this year.
One of my favourite upcoming trends and something that has caught my eye in online advertising and website design lately is cinemagraphs. A cinemagraph combines a still photo with a looping moving element to create a dynamic and eye-catching image. Although they have been around for a while now, there has been a recent rise in the use of cinemagraphs in online advertising and web design.
As a society, we are surrounded by images and visual media every day and it is getting harder to stand out from the crowd. Since cinemagraphs are still fairly underused, the unexpected movement creates an eye-catching visual that makes viewers take a second look. They also have the added benefit of portraying a certain mood or ambiance that is not always possible with static images.
On the technical side, they can also be a good alternative to videos on websites. Not only are cinemagraphs less distracting, they also consume less bandwidth, thus having a faster load time.
In this ever changing field, I am excited to see what web design has in store for 2017. This article outlines many more trends you can expect to see in 2017.
